On Wednesday 31st May 2017, 2nd Chance Programme trainees prepared, cooked and served a three course dining experience to more than 48 guests as part of the 10th Secret Kitchen event, raising over £600.00 for the 2nd Chance Programme.
The Secret Kitchen which took place at the 2nd Chance Programme headquarters in Elephant and Castle is one of the highlights of the 2nd Chance Programme calendar.
The project-based learning event offers young people, aged 18-25 the opportunity to work alongside professional chefs to produce a 3-course meal to guests who make donations to 2nd Chance based on their experience and overall enjoyment on the night.
The Secret Kitchen event is the culmination of hard work and application for trainees who have taken part on the 2nd Chance Programme. Furthermore, it represents the conclusion to the project-based learning aspect of the employment-readiness programme ahead of their journey in to work experience and a professional career.
The aim of the Secret Kitchen, which was themed with a casino look and feel on the night, is for the trainees to coordinate all aspects of a one-night pop-up restaurant, from designing the theme and decorations to serving guests and preparing the dishes on the night.
The Secret Kitchen event was coordinated in association with The Compass Group, one of the UK’s largest food and support services companies that provided graduate staff who assisted in everything from helping to prepare the trainees and training them up on the night to assisting in sourcing food, beverages and decorations as part of their own charity challenge.
The Compass Group have tasked their own graduates from across the organisation to assist with charitable initiatives, helping to turn an initial investment of £400 into £4,000 through arranging their own fundraising projects throughout the year.
Training manager, Lynette Tarr said: “The Secret Kitchen event is the ultimate test of our trainees’ resilience, composure and ability to cope under pressure, and once again all of our trainees were absolutely outstanding, both leading up to the event and on the night. The evening was a complete success. It was apparent that everyone had an enjoyable evening and enjoyed a fantastic meal and furthermore, we are delighted with the amount of money that was raised on the night that will go towards the 2nd Chance Programme. Speaking on behalf of all of the 2nd Chance team, I would like to congratulate all the trainees, and we could not be more proud of how each and every one of them performed on the night.”
The Secret Kitchen event is just the first of a number of exciting events taking place in 2017, with planning already underway on other upcoming fundraising initiatives taking place later on in the year.
